Every year the same question reaches our studio in the last week of October, usually on WhatsApp and usually late at night: “I want to give her a diamond ring for Diwali — where do I even start?” This guide is the answer we give across the table at HATO in Indiranagar, written down so you can plan before the festival rush. It covers when to buy, what each budget really gets you, how to find a ring size without giving the surprise away, and the paperwork that protects a gift worth lakhs.
A quick note on where the numbers come from: every price below is taken from HATO’s live catalogue of 204 natural diamond rings, includes 3% GST, and is the “from” price — the figure moves with the gold purity and diamond grade you choose. Nothing here is a festive mark-up or a made-up discount.
Why a diamond ring on Dhanteras?
Dhanteras opens the five days of Deepavali, and for generations Indian families have marked it by bringing something precious home — gold coins, silver utensils, a piece of jewellery — as a welcome to prosperity for the year ahead. The word itself joins dhan (wealth) with teras, the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight. A ring set in gold fits that tradition naturally, and a natural diamond adds something gold alone does not: a stone that was formed deep in the earth over billions of years and can be identified, graded and certified individually.
There is a practical side too. A diamond ring is one of the few gifts that is worn every single day. Clothes, gadgets and sweets are enjoyed and forgotten; a ring becomes part of someone’s hand, shows up in every photograph and, if it is chosen well, outlasts the person who bought it. That is why we suggest thinking of a Diwali ring less as a festive purchase and more as a family piece that happens to begin on Dhanteras.
Finally, a natural diamond ring keeps a measurable value. At HATO every ready-design ring can be exchanged or upgraded for life at 80% of its invoice value, or sold back to the studio at 70% (both before taxes) — we go through what that means in rupees further down. Very few gifts can promise that.
Diwali 2026 dates, and when to visit the studio
The festival falls later than usual this year, which gives you slightly more time — but the week before Dhanteras is the busiest of the year for every jeweller in Bengaluru. These are the dates to plan around:
| Day | Date | What it means for your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Dhanteras | Friday, 6 November | The traditional day to buy; book your viewing slot a few days ahead |
| Choti Diwali | Saturday, 7 November | Last full day for a calm, unhurried visit |
| Lakshmi Puja (Diwali) | Sunday, 8 November | The evening most rings are given |
| Govardhan Puja | Monday, 9 November | Family visits — a good day to give a ring to a parent |
| Bhai Dooj | Tuesday, 10 November | Our studio is closed on Tuesdays, so buy a sister’s gift before |
Private viewings at the studio last one hour and are held between 12 pm and 6 pm. A booked viewing means a stylist has a tray ready around your budget and taste before you walk in, which matters most in festival week when walk-ins wait. If you need a particular size, gold colour or diamond grade, booking early also gives the studio time to confirm availability. For exact timings on the festival days themselves, message the studio on WhatsApp — they confirm every booking there.
Decide when the ring will be given — Dhanteras morning, Lakshmi Puja night, a Bhai Dooj visit — and work back from it. A ready design can be chosen and taken in one visit once the size is confirmed; anything made to order needs more time, so start that conversation now rather than in Diwali week.
Choosing for the person, not the occasion
The single most useful question to answer before you look at a single ring is: what does she or he already wear every day? Look at the jewellery that never comes off — the chain, the bangle, the watch. Its metal colour, its size and how bold it is will tell you more than any trend list. With that in mind, here is how we usually guide people, by who the ring is for.
For your wife or partner
Choose something she can wear with both a saree and office clothes. A solitaire is the safest “forever” choice; a halo ring makes a modest centre stone look noticeably larger; a slim diamond band is the quietest and works stacked with a ring she already loves. HATO’s solitaires start at ₹1,13,469 for the Sitara princess-cut ring, and the halo rings in the Poetry collection start at ₹1,38,618.

For a fiancée-to-be
Many couples in Bengaluru now propose during Diwali — the family is together, the house is lit and the moment photographs beautifully. If this ring is a proposal ring, it deserves its own decision: read our guide to engagement rings in Bengaluru, compare solitaire prices carat by carat, or design the exact ring in the 3D ring designer with live prices. Proposal rings are the one gift where we always suggest seeing the stone in person before deciding.
For your mother
Mothers rarely ask for anything, which is exactly why a ring from a child lands so well. Choose comfort and presence over delicacy: a bolder cocktail ring from In Bloom or Treasure of Rose, with coloured stones that sit beautifully with silk sarees, or a classic High Jewellery piece. Avoid very fine prongs if she cooks or prays with her hands every day — a sturdier setting will look better for longer.

For your sister or daughter
For Bhai Dooj or a daughter’s first “real” diamond, think lighter and more playful: a slim band she can stack, or one of the smaller In Bloom and Eclipse rings. 20 of HATO’s natural diamond rings are under ₹1 lakh, starting with the Maliah ring at ₹48,530 — a genuinely special gift that does not need a special occasion to be worn.
For him
Men are the most under-gifted people at Diwali, and a ring is a quietly powerful way to fix that. The Lineage collection was designed for men’s hands: broader bands, cleaner lines and diamonds set low so they do not catch. There are 29 men’s diamond rings in the catalogue, starting at ₹71,091. If he wears a steel watch, a white-gold ring usually suits him; if he wears a gold kada or chain, stay with yellow gold.
For yourself
More and more of the rings bought in Diwali week at our studio are self-gifts — a reward for a promotion, a first salary or simply a good year. If that is you, buy the ring you would choose with no one watching: a statement cocktail ring, a coloured stone, a shape nobody else in the family wears. You will be wearing it for decades, so the only opinion that matters is yours.
What your budget really buys
Here is HATO’s full catalogue split by starting price, so you can see where most of the choice sits before you fix a number. Every price includes 3% GST.
| Budget | Rings to choose from | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Under ₹1 lakh | 20 | Diamond bands and smaller cocktail rings from In Bloom and Eclipse; from ₹48,530 |
| ₹1 – 2 lakh | 138 | The heart of the catalogue: most solitaires, halo rings, men’s rings and everyday statement pieces |
| ₹2 – 3 lakh | 37 | Larger cocktail rings, coloured-stone pieces and fuller halos |
| ₹3 lakh and above | 9 | High Jewellery and Treasure of Rose statement rings |
| 1-carat round solitaire | Make-your-own | About ₹4.48 lakh including GST on the make-your-own-ring list |
Three choices move any ring’s price: the gold purity (9K, 14K or 18K), the diamond grade (IJ-VVS, GH VVS or EF VVS) and, for solitaires, the size of the centre stone. On a design where you choose only the gold and the diamond grade, the gap between its lowest and highest combination is typically around 40%, so a ring that looks out of reach in 18K with an EF VVS stone may sit comfortably within budget in 14K with a GH VVS stone. Where you also choose the centre stone, its carat weight moves the price far more than anything else. The solitaire price explorer shows every combination side by side.
Spend on the diamond grade before the gold purity. Most people cannot see the difference between 14K and 18K once the ring is on the hand, but a better-graded stone shows its sparkle across a room for the rest of its life.
Getting the size right without spoiling the surprise
A wrong size is the most common way a surprise ring goes wrong, and it is almost always avoidable. These methods work, in order of reliability:
- Borrow a ring she already wears on the same finger. Bring it to the studio, or trace its inside edge on paper and measure the inside diameter in millimetres against our size guide. Make sure it is from the same hand — the right hand is usually a little larger.
- Ask someone who knows. A sister, a close friend or her mother may already know her size, or can find out in a casual conversation about jewellery.
- Measure in the evening. Fingers swell slightly in the heat and later in the day. A ring sized on a cool morning can feel tight by the end of a Bengaluru afternoon.
- When in doubt, go slightly larger. A ring that is a touch loose can be worn safely while you speak to the studio about resizing; one that is too small cannot be worn at all.
Our full guide to finding a ring size secretly covers every method, with the Indian size chart. The studio is also happy to help over WhatsApp — send a photo of a borrowed ring next to a ruler and they will tell you what to look for.
Yellow, rose or white gold — and which karat
The karat number tells you how much of the metal is pure gold: 18K is 75% gold, 14K is 58.5% and 9K is 37.5%, with the rest made up of alloys that give strength and colour. Higher karat means a richer colour and higher price; lower karat means a slightly harder, more scratch-resistant ring at a lower price. All three are real gold and all three are offered on every HATO design.
- Yellow gold is the natural choice for festive and traditional jewellery and suits warm Indian skin tones beautifully. If she wears gold bangles or a mangalsutra every day, start here.
- Rose gold is softer and more modern, and flatters the pink and coral tones in many coloured stones.
- White gold makes a diamond look whiter and icier, and is the usual choice for someone who wears silver or platinum-coloured accessories. It is plated to keep its bright finish, which a jeweller can refresh after a few years of wear.
Our detailed comparison of 9K, 14K and 18K gold goes deeper. The short version for a gift: if you are unsure, 18K yellow gold is the choice almost nobody regrets in an Indian family.
Check the certificate, not just the sparkle
Under festival lighting every diamond looks magnificent. The certificate is how you know what you are actually paying for. Every HATO diamond is natural and comes with an independent certificate from IGI or SGL recording its grade. Before you pay for any diamond ring, from any jeweller, check three things on the paperwork:
- That it says natural. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically similar and increasingly common; they are fine as a product, but they should be priced and labelled as what they are. HATO works only with natural diamonds.
- The four grades. Carat (weight), colour (on a scale from D, colourless, downwards), clarity (VVS means very, very slightly included — inclusions are extremely hard to see even under 10× magnification) and cut. Our natural diamond guide lets you move each one and see the stone change.
- That the certificate belongs to this ring. Ask the studio to show you how the report matches the stone you are buying, and make sure the invoice lists the gold purity, the diamond weight and the certificate.
A gift that keeps its value
This is the part of a diamond ring that most gift guides skip, and the part that matters most if the ring is meant to stay in the family. At HATO the promises are written into the terms, not left to the salesperson:
- Lifetime exchange and upgrade: any ready-design HATO ring can be exchanged or upgraded for life at 80% of its invoice value, excluding taxes. Exchange credit is capped at ₹3,00,000 and issued as a credit note redeemable within 30 days.
- Lifetime buyback: you can sell a HATO ring back to the studio at any time, at 70% of the invoice value, excluding taxes.
- Care for life: free cleaning and inspection at the studio for as long as the ring is worn.
In rupees: if a ring’s invoice value before tax is ₹1,00,000, it is worth ₹80,000 towards an exchange or upgrade at any point in the future, or ₹70,000 if it is ever sold back. One condition to know before Diwali: custom, made-to-order rings are excluded from exchange and buyback, which is another reason a ready design is the safer choice for a surprise gift.
Want something no one else has? Design it in 3D
If the person you are buying for has a very particular taste, start in the 3D ring designer. Choose the diamond shape, carat, setting, band and metal, turn the ring in your hand on screen, and see the price update as you go — including HATO’s nine signature designs such as Hidden Heart and Peekaboo. You can save the design and bring it to the studio, where a designer refines it with you.
A made-to-order ring takes longer than picking a ready design, so for a Dhanteras gift there is a lovely middle path: present the design itself on the day — a printed render, the saved design link and the plan to choose the stone together — and make the final visit a second celebration.
Making the moment
How the ring is given becomes part of the story it carries. A few ideas couples and families have shared with us over the years:
- At the end of Lakshmi Puja, once the family has finished the aarti and the diyas are lit — quiet, meaningful and already part of a tradition.
- On Dhanteras morning, as the first precious thing brought home that year.
- Inside a box of Diwali sweets, for the person who will open everything except the obvious gift box.
- With a note about why now — a year survived, a home built, a child born. The words are what she will remember when she looks at the ring in twenty years.
A ten-minute checklist before you pay
- Your total budget, including 3% GST.
- The ring size, from a borrowed ring or a trusted source.
- The metal colour that matches what they wear every day.
- A natural diamond with an IGI or SGL certificate that matches the stone.
- An invoice listing gold purity, diamond weight and the certificate.
- The exchange and buyback terms — and whether your ring is a ready design.
- When you can collect it, comfortably before the day you plan to give it.
- A confirmation of availability, size and final price from the studio before any payment — HATO confirms all three on WhatsApp before you pay.
If you would like a second opinion on a ring you have seen anywhere — including at another jeweller — send it to the studio on WhatsApp. We would rather you buy the right ring than buy one from us in a hurry.
